"That Napster shit, if that gets any bigger, it could kill the whole purpose of making music."

Jul 31 2000 - Hosting Blues

Well, it seems like free hosting provider 50megs.com is in on it too. They have a policy forbidding MP3s, and they erase any MP3s found in one's account every night. Hardly the kind of help independent artists need for sharing their own MP3s, huh? I'm not endorsing anyone, because by our nature we'll probably have to move a number of times. But don't ever go to 50megs.com. Not only are they idiots, but they were rude about it. Don't be fooled in thinking that they don't hear you because they don't take your money. Their advertisers expect traffic from them and you can help reduce that traffic.

And you see that note down there that says the Metallica spot isn't up? Well it is now! And we've also had a confirmed hit with it, you can see for yourself on our Hate Mail page. This is the way to do it, guys and gals. Let's raise some hell!

Jul 30 2000 - New Spots

We cut a bunch of new spots today and you should check the Download page. What's missing is a beautiful, beautiful spot written by one of the charter members of The Whatevermen, a fractured fairy tale about four young men and their heavy metal band :-). Unfortunately, this ISP we're on doesn't allow file downloads over a particular size.

Of course, we have webservers of our own, and we could put it there, and there'd be no restrictions, but I'm not stupid -- One stop to Network Solutions and you can find out my address. And as long as Hillary Rosen is walking around with The Power To Decide Who Lives And Who Dies, that's a chance we're not going to take.

Jul 29 2000 - Napster Gets Stay

This is great news for The Whatevermen. Napster is the distribution channel we need to get our message out. We have a month, more or less, to educate the Napster users about the real issues at hand. If we didn't have Napster, we certainly could move our message through networks like OpenNap and Gnutella, but the effect wouldn't be as great. Napster has become the de facto standard in this file-sharing arena, and we have to stick with the biggest.

To celebrate the opportunity afforded us by Napster's stay, we've released the first two "direct" spots, and they are available on our Download page. Please make note of the instructions on that page on how to effectively use these files to spread The Whatevemen's message. Since we have already seen in our internal trials that this kind of thing is working, The Whatevermen are working tirelessly to increase the number of spots and files to distribute across the Napster network.

Always feel free to drop us an email at [email protected] and give us feedback on the operation. Please make sure we see each and every news article about our efforts by e-mailing the links or other relevant information to that address.
