What You Can Do to Help
If you've made it to this page, we thank you. The notion that
you have decided it is a good idea to educate the public by
whatever means necessary is an indication that you feel more
than what the media tells you to feel.
Step 1: Get a Napster Account
Go to www.napster.com
and make yourself an account. If you are worried about the
possibilty of persecution, pick a username that in no way ties
back to you, and create an
EvilEmail
account. This allows you to put a valid email address in your
Napster account, but doesn't store any of your personal
information in either place. Then download the Napster software
and join their network.
Note: While setting up the Napster software, it will
help drive searches to your client if you lie about your
connection speed to the Internet. If you're 28.8, choose at least
56k. If you're DSL or Cable, pick T1 or T3. There are no
hard-and-fast rules about how fast one particular connection
goes in comparison with another, and when faced with a slow
download, someone will simply assume you've got several transfers
going. The idea is that when a person does a search, they'll
typically pick the fastest connection. Plus, Cable and higher
show up as green dots in the search results, which is psychologically
more likely to get selected than a yellow or red dot.
Step 2: Download The Whatevermen Spots
Go to our Download Page and download
some or all of our spots. The more you download, and the
faster your internet connection, the more you can help us.
DO NOT SHARE THE FILES ON NAPSTER IMMEDIATELY AFTER
DOWNLOADING. THEY WILL DO NO GOOD ON NAPSTER UNLESS THEY AE
RENAMED.
Step 3: Rename the Files
Check the Billboard or MTV Top 20 or Top 40 lists for this week.
rename the files in the style of MP3 files using this information.
Additionally, you may make extra copies of each of the files if
you wish to have a better chance they get downloaded.
Step 4: Share the Files on Napster
Place the files in a Napster-shared directory. If you've shared
no additional directories, there is one at
C:\Program Files\Napster\Music. Leave your Napster client
running for as long as you can. And watch as people snap up
what they think they like!
Step 5: Tell Your Friends
Tell your friends about The Whatevermen and get them to join in
with you! Our goal is to get to most of those 20 million
people that have joined Napster this year, and effectively make
a dent in the RIAA. We want to get on the news, and we'd like
a cease and desist letter or two from the RIAA (simply because
we're doing nothing illegal and won't have to cease or desist),
and we'd kill for a love note from Lars Ulrich. You can be sure
we'll make all that stuff public right here on The Whatevermen
site, so you can celebrate with us!
